Where’ve we been????

Well, back in early spring we found out we were pregnant again – 4th time around. From the beginning this one was different, so we thought, well it must be a girl. I kept truckin’ along with homeschool, the garden, processed a round or two of chickens with the family…

…then I got sick. Horribly sick. By the time garden-harvest time came around I was useless – the chickens ate most of the tomatoes and any harvest I could manage to collect was simply to put a meal together for that evening. Jonathan canned some pickles – that was a first for us – and we definitely enjoyed what we could while we could get it. But, hard as it was to watch it all wither, I just couldn’t get off the couch most days.

"Pickling"

“Pickling”

Well, I procrastinated going to the doctor. This being the 4th time around, I thought I knew what I was doing, so I just took my prenatals and ate healthy, but progressively got sicker. Finally at around 20 weeks, I went in for our first doctors visit. We all went together, knowing that with us having delayed so long, we’d probably get an ultrasound. I measured 24 weeks instead of the 20 I thought I was so, as we’d hoped for, the doctor called for an ultrasound. When the technician put the wand on my belly, he made a funny face. I watched him closely, wondering what could be wrong. He rubbed the doppler around on my belly a little more, turned the screen to face me and I was looking at a spine and a head… but they weren’t attached to one another. “What’s that?” I asked a little nervously. He grinned and replied, “That’s twins!”

Bolting up to look closer, I knocked the wand off my abdomen, exclaiming, “You’ve got to be freakin’ kidding me!”

“Nope,” he replied matter-of-factly. And I just busted out laughing… and laughing… and laughing… and laughing. The tech left the room for a bit – probably to give me some time to calm down. When he came back, I tried to remain still while craning my neck to watch him discover Baby A – boy, then Baby B – boy! When he left to retrieve the rest of the family so they could see the good news for themselves, I lay there on that table still laughing and marveling at the Lord that it’s just like Him to bless not just a little, but doubly! Clear as day, the names come to my mind: Isaac & Isaiah. We had picked out Isaiah for a boy’s name, (never dreamed we’d need a back-up). On the way home, Jonathan said, “What do you think of the name Isaac?” I told him I liked that.

The question came to mind, “Didn’t Isaac have something to do w/laughter?” I checked my Bible when I got home and, sure enough, Genesis 21:6 reads, “Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.'” Isaac: laughter. Isaiah: God is salvation. Pretty fitting I think.
